Hi Ya'll

The British ceramicist Katrin Moye is inspired by Italian Renaissance pottery from the 15th and 16th centuries. This may seem like a very traditional take, but actually, it’s everything but that. When Moye creates, she likes to mix the old and the new, and her speciality is weaving things considered 'taboo', such as nudity, menopause, or historic words for genitals, into her creations. It really is quite refreshing.

In this short video on her work (see above), Moye explains that in the Renaissance, it was very typical for churches to use a lot of visual symbols since most people were illiterate. Today, we have emojis, which she sees as our days’ unofficial folk language. Moye likes, she says, to mix the old Renaissance symbols with modern-day emojis, and when you look at the results, it’s not always easy to tell the difference between the two.

Moye's work may seem provocative to some, which is indeed her mission. At the same time, though, it’s also important for her to keep things light-hearted. “You can say quite controversial things if you make it funny and fun to look at, and I think that’s really important to me. To keep it light-hearted rather than being cross about things,” she says and adds: “I’m just gently poking people in the ribs a bit rather than hitting them over the head, and if it makes me laugh, I feel like maybe it’ll make other people laugh too”.

Moye's list:

*Is it complicated enough?

*Is it simple enough?

*Is it crazy enough?

*Is it beautiful enough?

*Is it stupid enough?

“If my work tics all of those five boxes, then I know I’ll have made something that I’m happy with”.
