Hi there,

Here’s the short documentary Most of the Time I Can Just Be by the Canadian filmmaker Kelly O’Brien. In the movie, O’Brien films her daughter, Emma, on a Toronto subway platform, where she’s dancing freely to music only she can hear through her headphones. Emma puts words to what has inspired her:

“So when I was younger, I used to read a picture book called "Miss Rumphius." It starts off with this little girl, and her grandfather is giving her advice.

And one of the things he said to her was, "You must do something to make the world more beautiful." So she grows up, and what she does is she buys a bunch of lupine seeds.

She goes around her town where she lives, and she just throws the seeds, and everybody's like, "What's she doing?”

Then in the spring, these lupines bloom everywhere.

And I guess I feel like just me dancing, it doesn't necessarily make the world more beautiful, but… I feel like it still brings joy.”

Let the trees remind you

that growth takes time.

Let the wind show you

that you’re allowed to shift

direction and pace.

Let the flowers remind you

that nothing blooms forever,

and that’s part of the beauty.

Let the ocean teach you

that you can hold both

stillness and storm,

softness and strength.

Let the clouds show you

that when things grow heavy,

it’s time to let go.

Let the stars remind you

that light is revealed

through darkness.

Let the sun teach you

that no matter how long

you’ve been hidden,

you will rise again.

Find a Special Wild Place

Find a special wild place - in a garden, on your doorstep, in a forest, on a beach.

Sit there in the daytime.

Jot down 'wild words' describing what you see, smell, feel and hear.

Return to the same place at night.

Record night-time's 'wild words'.

How different are the night-time words and daytime words?

Until next time,
